Child-Proofing a House: A Guide to Managing Your Rental Property

Now that I can stand on two feet and wobble. I penguin by two feet body to the kitchen where I look up and am flabbergasted by how huge everything is. Every piece of furniture, shelf, refrigerator, or appliance is a new adventure and I want to climb it. –Every Toddler Ever.

As a parent, it may seem like a good idea to let the little one browse the house to get some exercise. However, the parent or guardian must take responsibility for ensuring a safe environment for the child as everyone knows, accidents happen. Children are like miniature kittens because they are naturally curious and will want to climb things just because it is there.

Here is a simple checklist to keep the young ones safe from potential harm. And remember, it is okay to be too safe. A child’s body is precious and needs to be treated like a jewel.

Essentials for Toddlers:

  • Gate
  • Doorknob Covers
  • Window Locks
  • Appliance Locks and Shields
  • Stove Guard
  • Electrical Outlet Covers
  • Drawers and Cabinet Locks
  • Toilet Lock
  • Safety Traps for Heavy Appliances
  • Padded Mats in Bathrooms

Tips for the Safety for Young Children:

  • Never leave a child in the bathtub alone without supervision. Never.
  • Research the new federal safety standards when purchasing a new crib.
  • Detachable rails can be inserted in beds for children transitioning to a big kid bed.
  • Hide electrical cords or block them with furniture.
  • Use window guards and move furniture away from windows.

Safety Tips for the Outdoors:

  • Find playgrounds that are age-appropriate and safe for your child.
  • Keep large equipment such as lawnmowers or shovels locked away or out of reach in the yard
  • Teach children about poisonous plants such as poison ivy and keep them away from them.
  • Inform the kids about the wildlife and teach them that some animals should not be disturbed.
  • Keep all chemicals and kitchen knives stowed away. They are safety hazards to children.
  • Have a First-Aid Kit on hand in case accidents do occur.

The world is exciting for kids, but they will have to learn it little by little with one encounter at a time. Soon enough, their spatial reasoning will expand and they will conquer the backyard or their bedroom. Keep in mind to supervise children in all areas in the house and outside of it.
